There are seven NSPS professional canons. Whether we are members of NSPS or not, measuring ourselves against these canons is a great way to evaluate where we have room for improvement. Preeminent in the canons is the requirement to be mindful of the public’s interest and to do no harm not just to clients but all of the public in carrying out one’s professional services. Further investigation into the meanings of these canons cover: honesty in all dealings; clear and complete communications; being unbiased in determinations; and not having a personal interest in the outcome of findings.

Objectives:

  • Understand what conduct that is detrimental to the public so that the surveyor can learn to be discreet and judicious in his or her actions
  • Understand what the intent of the Canons are so that the surveyor can do his or her inventory of behaviors to determine if any corrective action is required
  • Know how to discriminate between the needs of the client and the public
  • Learn how to relate to the health, safety and welfare of the public, regardless of the client that has retained the surveyor
