We begin by relating surveying concepts to what that means in the language of geometry. Directions (azimuth and bearing), altitude or height determined trigonometrically, and coordinates, which, even though they appear to be algebraic concepts are also part of coordinate geometry…demonstrating the connections between various areas of mathematics. Surveying terms like spheroid and ellipsoid are covered mathematically and compared to other concepts such as the geoid. Various surveying applications are covered. We begin the introduction to trigonometric functions as well as polar and cartesian coordinates. Running time 34 minutes.

You will learn…

  • Basic surveying terms that the learner will be aware of but now expressed as concepts in geometry
  • The geometric descriptions of bearings, azimuths, and height
  • Further expansion of cartesian coordinates in two or three axes to begin the process of understanding coordinate geometry
  • The geometric connection between cartesian coordinates and polar coordinates
