This course in the Surveying Match Concepts series begins with basic terms used in geometry. Concepts such as similar triangles, and the sum of interior angles in a polygon are discussed with a surveying flavor. How the trig functions are defined, i.e. the basic axes and angle directions used in standard mathematics texts are presented to distinguish them from the way we express those same terms in surveying. Basic surveying terms are defined so that their relationship to mathematical ideas can be seen. While not geometry, surveying equations are also discussed to relate to the concept of equations and solving for variables in an equation. Concepts and identities related to the angles created when lines intersect are discussed. This session ends with a brief discussion of calculator functions. Running time 34 minutes.

You will learn…

  • Definitions of geometry terms
  • Concepts of similar triangles to solve surveying problems
  • Geometric “truths” such as how the sum of interior angles on a polygon is determined
  • How the mathematical disciplines are related to equation discussion
  • How calculator functions should be understood in a mathematical sense
