Beginning with the latitudes and departures from the previous program, we talk about why adjusting a traverse is done, and cover some of the common methods of adjusting. The goal of the adjustment is to cause the traverse to change slightly by adjusting the latitudes and departures so that the error of closure is zero. Emphasis on hand calculation is given to the compass rule (Bowditch method). While not extensively covered, the resulting adjusted traverse using the Transit Rule is presented for the learner to make comparisons. Running time 20 minutes.

You will learn…

  • Beginning with unadjusted latitudes and departures (∆ northings and ∆ eastings) determine the adjustment to each using the compass rule
  • Cover conceptually other methods of traverse adjustment including least squares
  • Complete hand calculation of adjusting a traverse by compass rule is covered, resulting in adjusted or balanced latitudes and departures
  • The resulting adjustment of the same traverse with transit rule is presented to understand the difference between the two methods
